For Burkhard, the family tradition of European craftsmanship began 2 generations ago with his grandfather who was the town blacksmith in Schwarzenberg, Austria. Following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather, Burkhard received his degree in Machine Engineering ( specifically wood working machines) in Austria. His training and experience in machine design and construction would later become an invaluable asset to his log building enterprise. Fink Machine was co-founded with Fink Custom Log Homes in 1991.
The machine division builds specialized equipment for the wood working industry and for Fink Log Homes. With this unique advantage, log building machinery can be specially designed to custom craft each log home. All aspects of the construction process from raw materials to the finished home can then be controlled on-site. Without the need to rely on outside suppliers, quality control, production and timing are supervised to Burkhard’s exacting standards, under one roof. The client is guaranteed of a high quality, precision-crafted log home delivered on schedule and as promised.
"We were very impressed with the whole process - first they helped us with a custom-designed plan, cut it out at the plant and then, when it arrived to be assembled, it all fit together
like a hand in a glove."

The Fink Custom Log Homes production plant is a climate-controlled environment where log home building continues all year around. Our plant utilizes a high-efficiency European furnace that recycles and converts wood waste from the plant into even heat. This environmentally-sensitive practice keeps the wood products at a consistent temperature throughout the year and enables our craftsmen to keep their fingers warm and nimble during the winter months. Each custom home is cut and crafted to the last detail in the plant, to ensure that no time is wasted at the client’s jobsite. Even unforeseen delays caused by Mother Nature can be minimized as the log home package arrives ready for final assembly. Our expert crews can erect a new log home within 3-5 days. ( based on an average home size) Interior finishing can then start on schedule to complete your dream home.
Soon your blueprint will be transformed into a living reality- a place you can’t wait to get home to!
Historic Techniques Implemented Today
"His timber-framing is amazing. The beams are so big and solid that you could probably park a D-8 Caterpillar on the roof!"

The long history of log home building originated in Europe over 400 years ago. Remarkably, many of these homes still exist today and are in excellent condition! Inspired by this “olde world “ craftsmanship, Burkhard incorporates these traditional techniques ( rarely in practice today) into his modern operation.
- The interlocking dovetail, one of the oldest and most refined corner joints are a defining feature of Fink Custom Log Homes today. The dovetail joint provides structural integrity and prevents air and water leakage.
- Large overhangs that have protected log homes for centuries are utilized in all Fink Custom Log Homes. This structural protection prevents rot and can eliminate the need for stains and preservatives.
- In timber frame applications, traditional joinery ( mortise and tenon ) is used to enhance the strength and appearance of the timber construction.
"We were awed by the workmanship. When
Burkhard and his crew arrived to do the interior finishing, there were no
power tools-just hand tools and so much skill."

Post World War 2 Europe riding the wave of new home construction, was also the birthplace of the laminated-beam log home. Valued for its superior strength and minimal shrinkage, the laminated- beam style has become the most popular type of log home building in Europe. Burkhard imported this technology to Canada where he has perfected the milling of laminated beams with his own custom-built machinery. Incomparable strength and craftsmanship are hallmarks of a Fink Custom Log Home.
